Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and President François Mitterrand cut the tricolour ribbon made in Calais lace before each giving a speech. The event of the official opening of the Channel Tunnel brought an unprecedented mobilisation of the world's media with nearly 1,200 journalists and photographers and an exceptional programme of festivities on both sides of the Channel.
