The Channel Tunnel Fixed Link jointly protected by the two States
Groupe Eurotunnel welcomes the decision of the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, to finance a new programme of fencing and additional security guards on its Coquelles site.
These measures add to the existing operational protection put in place by the French Interior Minister, as well as to the investments made by the Group, which has doubled the number of its security personnel since the beginning of the year, and installed reinforced security barriers on the platforms, which became operational from yesterday, and implemented a new plan for the overnight Freight Shuttle service. The Group has been in discussion with the SNCF Réseaux to strengthen the protection of the area around Calais-Frethun, outside its boundaries.
Jacques Gounon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Groupe Eurotunnel SE stated:
“This joint and significant effort by the two governments underlines the vital importance of the Channel Tunnel Fixed Link for international cooperation.”
During this period, the Group has taken action to protect the migrants from themselves from railway risks, to support its employees, who are exposed to particularly difficult circumstances, and to offer its passenger and freight shuttle customers a safe and secure service whilst at the same time working within the international protocols in place for the control of borders. Holidaymakers arriving on the terminals in Folkestone and Calais can travel in complete peace of mind. They are able pass through each terminal in a timely manner on even the busiest of days. At the same time the Group is equally focused on the freight traffic impacted on the Short Straits.
